Brick Christens Long-Awaited Teen Center
BRICK, NJ — In one corner of the room, a group of teens sat chatting. Another group crowded around a foosball table, taking turns smacking the ball with the "players" on the wooden field, while still another group played video games on a large flat-screen TV.
Lounge 270, Brick Township's new teen center, was abuzz with kids and adults as the center was officially opened last week.
The Lounge 270 Teen Center was conceived as a place for township teens to gather and hang out with friends and designed with input from Brick teens through the Brick Youth Club and the Mayor's Teen Advisory Council, includes furniture, computers, a pair of TVs and video game systems. Colleen Kahl of Enspirited Projects, who is the Brick Youth Club coordinator, helped to coordinate the efforts, the township said.
Lounge 270 was funded through a $25,000 grant awarded by the Ocean Partnership for Children. Councilwoman Andrea Zapcic and Township Assistant Planner Tara Paxton were instrumental in the township's receiving the grant.
It will be open on Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will be staffed by a member of the township's Recreation Department staff, providing adult supervision. It is the first municipally-run teen facility in Brick Township's history.
Any young person wishing to visit Lounge 270 will be given a free membership card. The card will be scanned upon entering and leaving the lounge. Membership cards will be available at the lounge and at the Brick Township Recreation Department.
"One of my goals as Mayor was to create a place for the young people of our community to call their own. Today, I am proud to say that we are doing just that," Ducey said. "The Lounge 270 Teen Center will provide a place for our teens to gather and spend time with their peers."
In addition to the regular Thursday hours, Lounge 270 will be open for special events for teens. Scheduled events include the following:
- French Fry Contest – Saturday, Nov. 18, 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.
